Sept 2025 Malaysian vehicle sales down 21.5% – MAA

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released vehicle sales data for the month of September 2025, reporting that a total of 58,490 units were delivered to buyers. This represents a decrease of 21.47%, or 15,989 units, from the 74,479 units sold in August (revised from the 73,041 units originally reported last month).

According to the association, the drop in numbers last month was attributed to fewer working days in September due to a number of public holidays (four days) and a general “wait-and-see” attitude towards the Budget 2026 announcement, including details on the Budi95 petrol subsidy rationalisation.

September’s numbers are also a marginal 0.24% (or 139 units) improvement over the same month in 2024, where 58,351 units of passenger and commercial vehicles were shifted. As for the year-to-date (YTD) figure, the 2025 total into the ninth month of the year stands at 579,336 vehicles sold, which is 2.78% behind the corresponding period in 2024, when 595,883 units were delivered.

For the month of October 2025, the association said it anticipates sales to be better than September due to the absence of an announcement regarding an extension of the CBU EV tax exemption, which ends this year. This is expected to drive demand for BEVs until the end of the year. It added that year-end promotion campaigns should also drive sales volume up.
