Channel Surfer app turns YouTube into a retro cable TV

Developer Steven Irby launched the Channel Surfer web app, which presents YouTube videos in a retro cable television style. The application groups content into 40 themed channels, including categories for news, sports, music, and movies. It also features tailored tech subjects such as AI, gaming, gadgets, and space.

Irby stated he built the app to address algorithm fatigue and indecision. He said he missed the experience of channel surfing without having to decide what to watch. The app aims to provide passive viewing without requiring active selection.

Channel Surfer broke 10,000 views on its first day, according to a post by Irby on X. The app functions as a YouTube discovery tool that surfaces videos through a linear channel interface. It presents a retro homage to the cable channel screen.

“I built Channel Surfer because I’m tired of the algorithms and indecision fatigue,” Irby told TechCrunch. “I miss channel surfing and not having to decide what to watch.” TechCrunch reported on the app’s development and features.

Irby designed the interface to mimic the browsing experience of 1990s cable television. The app groups disparate video content into curated linear feeds. This structure contrasts with the standard on-demand model of the platform.
