OpenAI is developing a feature called “Naughty Chats” that would allow ChatGPT to use adult-themed language for users aged 18 and older. Code references discovered in the latest ChatGPT app update indicate the feature is currently in development and cannot be activated yet. The company is also implementing an age-verification tool to gate access to the new mode.
The introduction of an adult content setting represents a significant shift in OpenAI’s content policies, which have previously restricted such material. This move aligns ChatGPT with competitors that offer fewer content guardrails. The feature will require explicit user consent, as it will not be enabled by default.
Android Authority reported finding the code strings in ChatGPT version 1.2026.055. The code describes “Naughty Chats” as a setting that lets ChatGPT use “spicier, adult-themed language” and is available to users 18+ only. The report notes there is currently no way to activate the feature.
OpenAI has introduced an age-prediction tool to verify user age based on account activity and usage patterns. Users not verified as adults will be moved to a teen experience and must submit a selfie via Persona for verification. This process is required to access the adult-themed features.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the erotica-friendly mode will not be activated unless a user specifically requests it. Altman first teased plans to relax restrictions around adult content in October 2025. The feature remains in development and has not been officially announced.
