Xiaomi eyes total independence with new chip and OS

Xiaomi plans to release a new smartphone in 2026 featuring an in-house chip, operating system, and artificial intelligence capabilities, aligning it with a strategy of developing core technologies independently. This initiative suggests a strategic pivot towards reducing reliance on external technology providers.

The company has been developing proprietary technologies, including the XRING chip and HyperAI. HyperAI integrates with HyperOS, providing on-device intelligent features such as image editing, system optimization, and enhanced security. These integrations aim to deliver faster task performance, improved privacy, and reduced power consumption for users. While HyperOS 3.0 currently utilizes Android versions, the company may discontinue this support in the future.

This move mirrors Huawei’s previous approach, which introduced self-made Kirin 5G chips, the HarmonyOS NEXT operating system, and Celia AI features into the consumer market. Xiaomi’s long-term goal is to unify its in-house chip, operating system, and AI on a single device, which is projected for 2026.
