{"id":42433,"date":"2026-01-06T11:31:36","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T11:31:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agooka.com\/news\/usa\/snow-causes-5-days-of-travel-chaos-in-amsterdam-with-over-2500-flights-canceled-and-planes-left-taxiing-for-hours\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T11:31:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T11:31:36","slug":"snow-causes-5-days-of-travel-chaos-in-amsterdam-with-over-2500-flights-canceled-and-planes-left-taxiing-for-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agooka.com\/news\/usa\/snow-causes-5-days-of-travel-chaos-in-amsterdam-with-over-2500-flights-canceled-and-planes-left-taxiing-for-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow causes 5 days of travel chaos in Amsterdam, with over 2,500 flights canceled and planes left taxiing for hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/695bb99564858d02d217b8ea?format=jpeg\" alt=\"Heavy snow falls in the Jordaan district of the city center on January 05, 2026 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.\"\/><figcaption>Snowfall in Amsterdam&#039;s Jordaan district on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Bierens de Haan\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Over 2,500 flights in and out of Amsterdam, one of Europe&#039;s busiest airports, have been canceled since Friday.<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall has disrupted travel, forcing some inbound flights to divert to other European cities.<\/li>\n<li>A KLM flight spent over two hours taxiing around the airport before going back to the gate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Amsterdam&#039;s Schiphol Airport has led the world in cancellations over the past few days as snow disrupted travel in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,500 flights were canceled in and out of the Dutch capital between last Friday and Tuesday, as of 10 a.m. per data from FlightAware.<\/p>\n<p>By Monday, the cancellation rate rose from 28% to over half of all scheduled flights.<\/p>\n<p>Handling over 66 million passengers a year, Amsterdam is the fourth-busiest airport in Europe and is a major hub for transcontinental travellers.<\/p>\n<p>Data from Flightradar24 showed the chaos on the tarmac on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A flight operated by KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, was supposed to take off for London at 9 a.m. But after it left the gate, it taxied around the airport twice before going back to the gate after almost two and a half hours.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/P3khY\/full.png\" alt=\"A bar chart showing the number of flights canceled at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport each day between Friday, January 2, and Tuesday, January 6\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&quot;Due to ongoing winter weather, air traffic at Schiphol is disrupted,&quot; a KLM spokesperson said. &quot;The winter conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Flight-tracking data also showed how an Emirates Airbus A380 spent three hours on the tarmac after landing before being able to move to its assigned gate.<\/p>\n<p>It later flew back to Dubai, seven hours behind schedule.<\/p>\n<p>For about an hour on Monday morning, some incoming flights had to divert while the weather was at its worst, an airport spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>These included an Air Canada flight that diverted to Frankfurt, Germany; two KLM flights from South America that landed in Paris; and a Garuda Indonesia flight from Jakarta that ended up in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Flights that were still able to take off from Schiphol have faced average delays of almost two hours.<\/p>\n<p>With temperatures below freezing, the delays are, in part, being caused by queues for de-icing. If a plane takes off with ice on its wings, it can cause a dangerous loss of control.<\/p>\n<p>A KLM spokesperson told Business Insider that the airline has four de-icing locations at Schiphol, which are at maximum capacity. &quot;It takes about 30 minutes to de-ice an aircraft, which may cause delays,&quot; they added.<\/p>\n<p>The Schiphol spokesperson said the airport is &quot;continuing to monitor the weather situation closely.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At present, only limited flight operations are possible,&quot; they added.<\/p>\n<p><em>Are you caught up in the disruption in Amsterdam?
