MITI receives Zeekr 009 from Sentinel Automotive – EV MPV loaned to ministry for assessment purposes

The ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI) has taken delivery of a brand-new Zeekr 009, with MITI minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in attendance to receive the keys earlier today.

The electric MPV, which is being loaned to the ministry by Sentinel Automotive (a Zeekr franchise holder under Karrus Automotive Group), will be used by the ministry for assessment purposes before it is eventually returned to the company.

Reza Mutalib, founder and director of Karrus Automotive Group, said the company is encouraged by the government’s initiatives to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption, which supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) aimed at reducing Malaysia’s carbon footprint. He added that he is hopeful that the government will continue to encourage EV uptake in order to meet MITI’s goal of having EVs make up 20% of Malaysia’s total industry volume (TIV) by 2030.

During the recent tabling of Budget 2026, it was not mentioned if import and excise duty exemptions for fully-imported (CBU) EVs would be extended beyond its current deadline of December 31, 2025, despite industry players pushing for it. On the other hand, tax incentives will remain for locally-assembled (CKD) EVs until the end of 2027.
