Google’s AI health coach debuts for Android Fitbit users

Google will launch a preview version of its AI health coach tomorrow for select Fitbit Premium users in the United States, limited initially to Android devices, with an iOS version planned for later release. The tool aims to assist users in achieving fitness and health goals through an AI chatbot integrated into the Fitbit app.

This Public Preview functions as a beta release, allowing Google to gather user feedback for ongoing refinements. The company states it will incorporate input to add, change or improve features and capabilities. Google acknowledges that as a new experience, so initially, there will be some gaps in the functionality.

The AI health coach operates as a chatbot designed specifically to support users in reaching their fitness and health objectives. Google describes the technology as secure, personalized and grounded in science. Interaction begins with a five-to-ten minute conversation between the user and the coach to evaluate individual health and fitness goals.

Beyond initial assessment, the coach serves multiple roles, including acting as a sounding board for personal health, fitness, and sleep goals. It functions similarly to a personal trainer by reviewing and adjusting existing fitness plans based on user input. Users can track their progress through the coach, which provides advice on emerging trends in their data.

One key capability involves generating customized workouts. The chatbot tailors exercises to specific constraints provided by the user, such as limited space. For example, it can design a routine suitable for a cramped hotel room, ensuring practicality in various environments.

The coach extends its utility to medical interactions and sleep monitoring. Users can collaborate with the bot to brainstorm questions for discussions with doctors, preparing informed inquiries. For sleep, the tool tracks and analyzes multiple metrics, delivering a detailed sleep analysis that identifies patterns and trends potentially affecting rest quality.

All data and insights from the coach remain accessible directly within the Fitbit app. This integration ensures seamless use alongside other app functions.

Rollout occurs selectively during the preview phase. Eligible Fitbit Premium users in the US will receive an in-app notification indicating when the software becomes available for their account. Compatibility extends to any Pixel Watch or Fitbit device, broadening access for existing hardware owners.

Parallel to the coach’s introduction, Google is redesigning the entire Fitbit app to emphasize AI-driven features. The health coach integrates across every aspect of the app, embedding its capabilities throughout the user interface and functionalities.
