Seen at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show (JMS) in Tokyo was a range of alternate fuel vehicles and TVs from Yamaha. All currently in prototype stage, the lineup from Iwata motorcycle maker includes mid-development prototypes, different electric and hybrid motorcycles, eBikes, and electric wheelchair concept models, giving a total of 16 vehicles, including six world premieres.
These include the Motoroid:A Lambda, Tricera, Proto BEV, Proto HEV and PHEV, and the H2 Buddy Porter Concept. The Motoroid self-balancing motorcycle has previously been seen in development and the Motoroid:A represents the latest step in its evolution.
Featuring a unique twisting motion to its frame, the Motoroid:A Lambda uses AI-assisted self-balancing and motion control with a self-righting ability should it fall. A self-learning algorithm learns through reinforcement, a technique usually reserved for AI systems that play video games or train robots.
Meanwhile, the Proto HEV comes with an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, allowing the rider to switch between quiet urban riding and powerful road performance. A further development is the Proto PHEV, which can run fully electric, or in hybrid mode, while the Proto BEV is a test bed for a new, large capacity battery with a sound system that helps the rider sense the bike is doing through audio cues.
There is also the Tricera, Yamah’s take on the trike with all three wheels steering to reduce turning radius and sharpen steering response. Yamaha is also pushing forward on developments in hydrogen technology.
Also on display at the JMS was the H2 Buddy Porter Concept, jointly developed with Toyota. This hydrogen powered scooter is designed for urban commercial use, coming with a roof and large storage box mounted at the back.
