Meta Platforms Inc. has initiated development on its Quest 4 headset, while deferring the release of its Quest Air headset to the first half of 2027.
Meta had planned to launch the Quest Air, a lightweight device with a split design and independent computing unit, in 2026. This headset targets mixed-reality applications such as office work and cinematic viewing, primarily for seated scenarios. The company delayed the Quest Air to allow additional development time, as UploadVR reported.
The Quest 4, Meta’s next-generation primary headset, is focusing on immersive gaming experiences. This device is projected to offer substantial upgrades over the Quest 3 while significantly reducing manufacturing costs. This development suggests a strategic shift toward profitability for Meta’s Reality Labs virtual reality division, potentially moving away from hardware subsidies.
Meta’s hardware roadmap has historically experienced frequent modifications, including project initiation, adjustment, and cancellation, prior to official product launches. Specific details and release timelines for both the Quest Air and Quest 4 remain subject to change until production and market release approach.
