The announcement comes amid diplomatic tensions between the US and Denmark, sparked by repeated statements from President Donald Trump that Greenland is needed by the United States for national security and defense reasons. Last week, Trump ruled out the use of military force and agreed to work on a deal to expand the American presence on the Arctic island without annexing it.
The monarch will visit the semi-autonomous territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, in the week beginning February 16, Frederik said on Thursday, speaking to reporters during a state visit to Lithuania.
