BYD confirms solid state battery production to begin in 2027

BYD has officially confirmed its roadmap to begin small-batch production of sulfide-based solid-state batteries in 2027, positioning itself at the forefront of the next generation of EV technology. The new batteries utilize sulfide composite electrolytes with high-nickel cathodes and silicon-based anodes to achieve an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. This specification supports vehicle ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers, rapid charging from 0 to 80% in roughly 10 minutes, and a lifespan of up to 10,000 cycles.

Initial deployment targets the premium Yangwang brand with a demonstration fleet of approximately 1,000 vehicles in 2027. By 2030, as manufacturing matures and costs reach parity with liquid lithium batteries, BYD plans to expand installation to around 40,000 vehicles across its Dynasty and Ocean series. This timeline aligns with competitors like CATL and is supported by BYD’s involvement in the government-backed China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform.
