Apple is reportedly set to introduce advertisements in Apple Maps later this year, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. An official announcement regarding this development could occur as soon as this month, with advertisements expected to begin appearing in the iOS Maps app by summer.
The planned advertising system will allow companies to bid for placement within the app. Users searching for local businesses such as restaurants, bars, or stores may see ads for these businesses as top search results based on their successful bids. The implementation of ads aims to create a significant new revenue stream for Apple, which has faced ongoing challenges in competing with Google Maps and its established ad offerings.
This is not the first time reports have surfaced about Apple considering ads for its Maps service. Earlier reports from October discussed the possibility of an advertising initiative, highlighting the company’s ongoing evaluation of its app’s monetization strategies. The integration of such ads mirrors the practices seen in both Google Maps and Bing Maps, which have long included advertising for local businesses.
