Thai police have charged a train driver with negligence following an accident on Saturday in central Bangkok, where a freight train collided with a passenger bus at a railway crossing, killing eight people and injuring 32 others. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

The train driver is charged with negligence causing death, as evidence clearly points to reckless actions that led to the fatal consequences,

– Makkasan Police Station Chief Urumporn Kundeisumrit told Reuters.

He added that the bus driver will also be charged; however, he is currently undergoing medical treatment and cannot be questioned, so official charges have not yet been filed.

Investigators are also examining whether additional charges can be brought.

On Saturday, a freight train crashed into a bus that had stopped on the tracks at a red light, sparking a fire that engulfed the vehicle and dragged several nearby cars along the tracks.

The accident site has already been cleared and traffic has resumed, while authorities plan to strengthen safety measures and oversight to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, said Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat.

Passengers noted that they had long feared a collision, as vehicles continued to pass through the crossing despite warning signals.

"This should not have happened. I want all drivers to have a good understanding of traffic rules," said 20-year-old train passenger Tanphisit Nawatkonangkhun.

Thailand's roads are among the deadliest in the world, according to the WHO, due to weak enforcement of safety regulations.
