On Monday, a ship carrying humanitarian aid from the governments of Mexico and Uruguay arrived in Havana to help mitigate the escalating crisis in Cuba, UNN reports, citing AP.

Details

According to a statement from Cuban state media, the vessel, which departed from a Mexican port, delivered personal hygiene items as well as 1,700 tons of grain, powdered milk, and other food products.

Cuba's Minister of the Food Industry, Alberto López Díaz, stated that the cargo arrived "during a period of great economic difficulty, exacerbated by the tightening of the blockade imposed against our country by the United States government."

Tensions between the two countries have risen, and the U.S. is increasing pressure to seek an indictment against former Cuban President Raúl Castro for his alleged role in the 1996 shootdown of aircraft. At that time, Castro served as Minister of Defense.

López Díaz stated in his announcement that the aid delivered on Monday would be distributed "with the utmost responsibility and respect," with priority given to children, the elderly, and vulnerable families.
