Russia's campaign against the Baltic states is "concerning" due to the possibility of escalation. This was stated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, UNN reports with reference to The Guardian.

Details

According to the diplomat, Russia's repeated accusations against the Baltic states regarding possible cooperation with Ukraine to carry out drone attacks on its territory are "concerning" because "you always worry about escalation."

"We understand that these countries feel threatened by this for obvious reasons. So it is concerning because you always worry that something like this could escalate into something bigger, and that is always possible,"

– Rubio said.

He emphasized that the US is "watching this closely" and is "engaging" with NATO on the matter.

"We are concerned about this because we don't want it to lead to some kind of broader conflict that could actually lead to something much worse,"

– the US Secretary of State emphasized.

Context

Earlier, Russia claimed that Ukraine was allegedly preparing strikes against the Russian Federation from the territory of Latvia. Riga and Kyiv categorically denied this information.

Subsequently, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in response to a question about Russia's escalating rhetoric and threats against Latvia and the Baltic states, stated that Russian claims regarding Latvia and the Baltic states are "absolutely absurd, and Russia knows it."
