"We are not going to cede sovereignty,"

Nielsen told reporters, commenting on the possibility of establishing new U.S. military bases in Greenland.

The statement followed media reports that Washington is allegedly seeking to establish three new American bases in the south of the island. According to the TV channel, the U.S. proposed a deal under which these facilities could be granted the status of sovereign United States territory.

Last week, the Prime Minister of Greenland met with U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy for the Arctic, Jeff Landry. According to Nielsen, the meeting was "constructive," but "showed no signs" that Trump had abandoned the idea of purchasing Greenland.

As Bloomberg notes, the U.S. is also seeking guarantees for a long-term military presence on the island even if Greenland gains independence. Additionally, Washington is trying to increase its influence over investments in Greenland to limit Russian and Chinese involvement in the region.
